If you were to ask me..
- I'd suggest taking a long time to create a strong theme / reason for existence
- A willingness to do more than "normal group activity" and stand out against the crowd
- Have something in the group that you can show off and be proud of (in order to make a name for yourself + garner new recruits)
- Make sure your events are FUN, not just NEW; put thought into it
- Have a very streamlined and thoughtout process for reprimanding people; in fact, have a set of rules that everyone, even yourself, must follow, and figure out exactly what to do when those rules are broken
- Make sure you have a level head on your shoulders, and make sure anyone you have on board to help you in running it does too. If you see someone's not pulling their weight, it can lead to other staff doing the same. Have compassion, but know when to put your foot down, even if its your staff
- Always remember to listen to your community in some way, let them be a part of building the group just as you and your staff do, even if its small
- For the love of god, if you have history in this community, REAL history that can be traced back to a sona of some kind, do not use that sona. Someone somewhere is going to have a problem with you and they will use your past to sabotage your group and your image
Always remember that your regiment is what you put into it. Your members are a mirror of yourself and your staff; what you all care for, they will care for in time. The same goes for what you do not care for. If you show a lack of concern for acting professional, your entire group will look like that; if you care less for something, so will your members (this can work in your favor in certain situations, so please remember that.) People follow those in charge, not rules.
Finally, if you're wanting a military themed regiment, take it seriously. All of it. Treat every event like it actually matters and the actions taken within it mean something to the story or setting you're trying to paint. Not only does it make your theming more rich but it also makes people pay attention more, interact with the actual regiment rather than their friends. Yes, it's a pony game, and yes, everyone knows it's not real, but when you treat something "silly" like it's actually worthwhile, you will benefit tremendously. It's a feeling we've lost over the years, so it's a lot harder to do these days, but it's *incredible* once you actually get it down.
If this didn't answer your question well, I suggest going to my friend, @SuperstitionalRealism (Github) and ask the question on their Atabook. They, like me, have a lot of experience in the community and will be able to give a different perspective on it!! Good luck on your regiment, I hope to partner with you one day. ^^
All of this was /ooc, so..
